A really great tutorial, I've noticed that it's not only helpful for portrait photographers, but for me as a digital artist who paints portraits from scratch, too :la: I'm really glad I didn't miss up on this, thank you so much for the help!

I'm quite glad that it helped. I wrote it 8 years ago, it seems a long time from now ;)

Wow, really? I just found it a while ago and thought it was pretty recent... Nevertheless it's incredibly useful :la:

:highfive:

It's funny because the photos I do now are quite different: very sharp and wide-angle view.
Nonetheless, composition principles (which derive from painting) remain the same.

Have a great day!

thanks for the tutorial!
I used to take portraits with friends....with my DDC

but after I got so into macro photography, I've forgotten how to take portraits...with DSLR.

I found it very very different feel, when holding the DDC and DSLR~

anyhow, thanks for the tutorial ^~^

thanks a lot for this, I'm hopefully doing a shoot with one of my best (girl)friends, she's extremely beautiful, and she has glasses. do you have any tips for shooting her with her glasses on?

I think this is really helpful for me, since I've never done anything like portrait photography... this really explains everything :)

As for glasses, just try to avoid reflections. It's easy because you'll see them directly :)

hm, ok :) I won't be using a flash (I have no external flash and prefer natural light, above all) so I don't think it'll be too much of a problem :)
thanks anyway!!

As long as she will look straight at the light, no matter if the light is natural or not, it will reflect on the glasses. It might be easier if her glasses are in another direction, i.e. if she's looking from the side.

I've got no idea how I'm going to shoot her, never done anything like this as I said.. I'll just see how it turns out and make sure I have some ideas :)

Thanks for the tips, I'll keep them in mind the next time I'm doing portrait photography - which probably will be pretty soon.

You said that you don't recommend zoom lenses, and I began to wonder what lenses you do recommend for close-up photos (I have the Canon EOS 20D). I'm thinking of buying Canon's EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM - is there any other Canon lens you think I should choose?

If you want to make closeups, then you need a macro lens. The Sigma 105mm f2.8 is dead sharp and cheap.
