Community spirit anyone? - And cleaning up

Journal Entry: Tue Aug 2, 2011, 7:25 AM

Hello my friends!

I has been some time since I've noticed that, and it's becoming more and more obvious everyday: there isn't much activity/new deviations here anymore from the artists I was following up and enjoying. I also think there are less comments as well.

What's going on?

Well, despite DA being the most flexible and convenient on-line art community, I feel that most of my friends don't find anymore the "community spirit" they liked years ago. Maybe we "grew up" and feel some other websites are better suited to our needs? Nonetheless, it seems some of us didn't enjoy the "improvements" and new functions brought by the latest DA versions. Things like points, llamas, Muro, "mustache" contests, or even being asked to submit to "deviantART Stock Collection / Fotolia" (!) by DA team make the site looks more amateurish/playful/facebookish/myspacish than before (and less than a "portfolio" as well - yes, I know about the portfolio option on DA)

Sorting things up

I've spent some time on DA and mostly on my website to "clean up" some of my former images: photos that I don't like anymore or don't match my current taste. This will leave space for my upcoming projects.

What's next?

I'm planning to work on a large photo-series in a different style over summertime. It will be called CEREMONIALS.
Experimental short-movies will also keep me busy.

For the moment, I will most probably continue to upload some my work on DA, even if I'm not quite sure about it. I will be also active on communities that I like. This includes:

Vimeo for all my video work: www.vimeo.com/jsmonzani/videos
Behance for a selection of my work: www.behance.net/jsmonzani (please, don't need to ask me to join your circle if you're on it as well)
artlimited.net, for a selection of my photos: jsmonzani.portfolio.artlimited…

For these two communities, I don't plan to upload necessarily all of my work. My website www.simplemoment.com will remain the best source for that.

Finally, there's a "fan page" on Facebook for those interested by my latest news (please, don't ask to become "friend" on my personal Facebook account).

Well, this it, have fun and a great summertime!

Cheers

Jean-Sébastien

Please do not use any of my photos in your art without my agreement. I spend a lot of time on them and they are NOT stock. Using them in your own manipulations, designs, blogs, etc. is a NO-NO and a violation of copyright.

Never tried it. Facebook is already gathering lots of private data on me and I'm reluctant to do the same with google :)

Time changes everything, for better or worse.
I don't like Facebook, as they degrade the image quality, but Facebook is for the mass market, I mean who doesn't use Facebook nowadays. :P

But my primary site will still be DA, though I hope to start a personal site soon.

 Knowing the quality of your work, you should get your own site to feature it ^_^

Hey Jean-Sébastien,

You still have watchers here on DA. And I'm still watching. I a bit challenging to take the time to really comment and critique art here.
With so much taking our time in our lives and elsewhere. We are constantly moving. I think we need to "stop and smell the rose" as they say.
I just yesterday went to the library and checked out a bunch of photography books of different photographer to get some inspiration.
There is so much going on that just sucks the life out of you.
But I am still watch your work. I hope to be as you as you someday.
Please keep posting your work. Their are some of us who still care.

Cheers.

I think the community is just dying, I have to be honest and say that I don't really post on here as well, just check art from others...

I do understand that dA is getting a bit 'myspacey' but I think that's part of dA's overall charm, it *can* appeal to just about anyone no matter their age or nationality. While there are better portfolio websites out there, I feel that dA is more open to the 'fun' aspect even though it may be points or llamas. It might not work for the pros but it's more than enough for me for hobbies and stuff :) Plus it's free! Always a major plus for a student XD

I've also subscribed to your vimeo account because your movies are always a source of inspiration for me :la:

Thanks.
I'm not complaining much about DA, I think it has good things to offer to pros as well (as I said, it's to me the most convenient and fully-featured community).

I just notice that the most important part of its purpose - the interaction between us (about art) - is getting less attraction than before.

Ah yes, I agree with you there. Perhaps we need to 'revive' that interactive process somehow? Then again it's majorly hard especially dealing with life etc. Who knows lol -_-;;

You're not alone Jean-Sé, I don't feel the need to belong to dA as I once did. My sub just ran-out and that was the only thing really holding me back.

I've noticed the same thing: fewer comments and fewer submissions. I'm not sure why that is, although I have to admit I've been spending more of my networking time on Facebook...

I do agree that I network with artists I like through Facebook, yet it's not as cool as DA when it comes to art.

there's a limit to photos you can post here?
i think the feature that allowed you to view thumbnails made it easier to delete the submissions i have
i also think facebook killed deviantart :D

No there's no limit to the number of photos, I just wanted to only feature the ones that I still like ;)
