More than 10 years on DA!

Journal Entry: Fri Aug 2, 2013, 1:04 AM

Yeah, it's true! It' been more than 10 years that I've been on DA! What a long time! :highfive:

Thank you all for your support! You surely helped me make progress and improve my work.
I'm still quite active, producing lots of new projects. Unfortunately, I don't upload them much on DA, so here are some sample images. You will find much much more works on my website: simplemoment.com

If you're interested to follow my ongoing projects, there's also a Facebook page: www.facebook.com/jsmonzani.new…

Have a pleasant day!

Be part of REMEMORIES (second session)

Journal Entry: Mon May 28, 2012, 11:47 PM

Would you like to be part of my photo-project REMEMORIES, where actors will reinterpret on photos real memories from anonymous persons?

Tell me about a personal event that has been important to you

I would like you to remember an important personal event, somethings that still seems important to you today. It doesn't need to be impressive, and it can be intimate as long as it was truly important to you. You don't need to select something obvious that people already know, it can be a discovery, the first time you've done something... it doesn't matter if it took place during your childhood or recently.

Short texts are usually the best.

Your memory remains anonymous! Do not sign it.

If you would like to participate, follow this www.jsmonzani.com/rememories/

If you want to see more photos and read about the project (without participating), check out this www.simplemoment.com/rememorie…

The first photos of the project are on-line since September 2012. A second "chapter" (with new shootings) will start in Spring 2013, so, stay tuned!

Thank you!

Recent projects: CEREMONIALS and NON-PORTRAITS

Journal Entry: Tue Oct 11, 2011, 12:04 AM

Hey there,

It has been some time since I haven't updated my account. As previous announced, I've stopped uploading all of my images on DA, but you can find them on my website. However, I've enriched my gallery with a selection of these photos - all of the others are visible on the links I'm providing below.

CEREMONIALS

Visit: www.simplemoment.com/PagePhoto…

Sample images (more on my website):

CEREMONIALS I - 1 by jsmonzani CEREMONIALS II - 1 by jsmonzani CEREMONIALS III - 4 by jsmonzani CEREMONIALS IV - 4 by jsmonzani CEREMONIALS V - 2 by jsmonzani

The situations presented in CEREMONIALS unquestionably share some mysterious interpretations: tragedy or comedy? If the formal aspect of a ceremony seems to link them, the motivation and the reactions of their characters as well as the symbolic elements are difficult to understand.

Are they an analysis, or even a caricature of our everyday life? Are they linked to reality as suggested by the clothes and contemporary places? Or do they have to be considered independently of a precise context - entities of their owns?

No explanation emerges: from the global view of the situations to the more microscopic inspection of each character (and his/her motivations or sometimes ambiguous reactions), each approach brings a different interpretation. The keys will never be shared.

Without dogmatism nor a literal approach, CEREMONIALS plays with imagination.

NON-PORTRAITS

Visit: www.simplemoment.com/PagePhoto…

Sample images (more on my website):

NON-PORTRAITS 1 - 1 by jsmonzani NON-PORTRAITS 1 - 2 by jsmonzani NON-PORTRAITS 1 - 3 by jsmonzani NON-PORTRAITS 2 - 1 by jsmonzani NON-PORTRAITS 2 - 2 by jsmonzani

The "non-portraits" project combines non-narrative experimental photoseries where the human figure is represented without using the face as the main vector of expressivity. These collaborations with actors or dancers often get their inspiration from performing arts. Therefore, "non-portrait" doesn't mean that the human figure disappears: what interests me here is rather its interaction with an environment. There is no storyline, and no symbolism as in conventional dance.

The non-conventional body postures that don't seem to reproduce any specific social situation challenges the viewer. "What is happening here?" is the question one might ask. This freedom of interpretation is a key element in this work. Nothing is "right" or "wrong". It is more important to feel than to understand – and to have fun doing so.

Non-portraits are an ongoing project that has started in mid-2011. Its boundaries will evolve overtime, with some similarities. For instance, the environment has a strong presence in some of the photos. The neutral costume is also important as the images shouldn't look like performances but rather carry a vernacular atmosphere – with a twist.

As an attempt to break the rules and go beyond what I've done in the past, these non-portraits might be more challenging for the viewers and less "easy" than my former regular portraits.

Community spirit anyone? - And cleaning up

Journal Entry: Tue Aug 2, 2011, 7:25 AM

Hello my friends!

I has been some time since I've noticed that, and it's becoming more and more obvious everyday: there isn't much activity/new deviations here anymore from the artists I was following up and enjoying. I also think there are less comments as well.

What's going on?

Well, despite DA being the most flexible and convenient on-line art community, I feel that most of my friends don't find anymore the "community spirit" they liked years ago. Maybe we "grew up" and feel some other websites are better suited to our needs? Nonetheless, it seems some of us didn't enjoy the "improvements" and new functions brought by the latest DA versions. Things like points, llamas, Muro, "mustache" contests, or even being asked to submit to "deviantART Stock Collection / Fotolia" (!) by DA team make the site looks more amateurish/playful/facebookish/myspacish than before (and less than a "portfolio" as well - yes, I know about the portfolio option on DA)

Sorting things up

I've spent some time on DA and mostly on my website to "clean up" some of my former images: photos that I don't like anymore or don't match my current taste. This will leave space for my upcoming projects.

What's next?

I'm planning to work on a large photo-series in a different style over summertime. It will be called CEREMONIALS.
Experimental short-movies will also keep me busy.

For the moment, I will most probably continue to upload some my work on DA, even if I'm not quite sure about it. I will be also active on communities that I like. This includes:

Vimeo for all my video work: www.vimeo.com/jsmonzani/videos
Behance for a selection of my work: www.behance.net/jsmonzani (please, don't need to ask me to join your circle if you're on it as well)
artlimited.net, for a selection of my photos: jsmonzani.portfolio.artlimited…

For these two communities, I don't plan to upload necessarily all of my work. My website www.simplemoment.com will remain the best source for that.

Finally, there's a "fan page" on Facebook for those interested by my latest news (please, don't ask to become "friend" on my personal Facebook account).

Well, this it, have fun and a great summertime!

Cheers

Jean-Sébastien

Color management: Adobe RGB / sRGB explanation.

Journal Entry: Sun Jul 31, 2011, 12:36 AM

Hello,

I've just received some questions from a deviant about color management and I think you might be interested in my answers, if you're wondering how these works. This is just the way I do, some people will probably have different opinions on this, but I try to stick to facts.

I know that whenever I post this kind of thing, I get even more questions :) Please, do the search for yourself after reading this, there's a lot of information on the included documentation from Adobe as well as the web. I'm not a FAQ, OK? :)

1. Do you use sRGB / Adobe RGB on your camera color profile?
I shoot RAW, so I don't need to set the profile in the camera (neither color balance). Adobe RGB gives richer tones when you process your image extensively, but I tend to only use it when I need to convert to CMYK and print on professional printers (i.e. for posters for clients). I usually work in sRGB as it is the expected profile for JPEG images that you send to on-line printing companies, as well as monitor-profile (for viewing images on the web)

Two interesting docs:

The theory: www.cambridgeincolour.com/tuto…

And practice: (old article from 2006, might not be super accurate now but sums up pretty well the pitfalls of using Adobe RGB if you don't know how to use it)
www.kenrockwell.com/tech/adobe…

The second link summarizes it pretty well: "Adobe RGB squeezes colors into a smaller range (makes them duller) before recording them to your file. Special smart software is then needed to expand the colors back to where they should be when opening the file."

I've just done this test for you: I've opened the same RAW file with Adobe RGB and sRGB. Both images display exactly the same on my screen. If I compare R, G, B values for similar pixels, they are of course different, proving that each model renders them differently.  Now, if I work on the image (I've done a simple series of adjustments), I can see a difference in the way extreme colors are rendered. This is explained by the different spaces. As long as you don't heavily retouch, differences are almost nonexistent. Theoretically, you'll get a wider gammut with Adobe RGB, however if you view it on a sRGB screen, it should be difficult to notice it.

2. What is your color space for photoshop work?
sRGB or Adobe RGB, depending on the needs. If you're speaking of the "Working Color Space", this actually just defines the default space whenever you create new images or when you open images that don't have a profile. When I work for the web, I set it to sRGB and don't bother anymore. My understanding is that the "Working Color Space" doesn't affect your colors. I.e. : if you set it to sRGB, yet open a document in Adobe RGB, then Photoshop will handle this document in Adobe RGB, no matter your "Working Color Space". Quoting the documentation:

"A working space profile acts as the source profile for newly created documents that use the associated color model. For example, if Adobe RGB (1998) is the current RGB working space profile, each new RGB document that you create will use colors within the Adobe RGB (1998) gamut. Working spaces also determine the appearance of colors in untagged documents.

If you open a document embedded with a color profile that doesn't match the working space profile, the application uses a color management policy to determine how to handle the color data. In most cases, the default policy is to preserve the embedded profile."

3. In Photoshop what mode do you retouch? RGB/LAB?
RGB is far easier for me.

4. How you achieve constant color tone for each photo story?
Manual color-balance + photos shot in manual exposure = coherent photos allover a series.

I advise you to read "Photoshop for Photographers" from Martin Evening, or the documentation.

Please note that there is a option for advance conversion between profiles in menu Edit -> Assign profile ... This is the one I use for CMYK conversion.

Cheers

JS

B R E A T H E + news on upcoming projects

Journal Entry: Tue Jul 12, 2011, 11:38 PM

Hello!
I hope that you're doing good.
I've improvised a small photo-series some days ago and this set is now completed. Technically, I've been using a lighter camera than my regular pro one with a cheap lens that gives some interesting effects. The photos are not post-processed and there is no color-correction either.

There will be some B&W shot with the same model too.
As you can see, after more than 10 years of shooting "classic" portraits (in 170 sessions!), I'm trying nowadays to explore different directions, while still working with actors.

Over summertime (that's a scoop!), I will hopefully launch a large photo-project called CEREMONIALS. Stay tuned and expect to see something at the end of August.

 Have a great summertime!

The Resignation Room

Journal Entry: Wed Jun 22, 2011, 12:05 AM

Hello,

I hope that you will enjoy the different style in this new experimental photo-series. I initially had planned some other portraits with the model, and while they were pretty, none of them seemed original to us. We thus dropped the idea in the middle of session, and improvised something else. The result is much more interesting in my opinion.

I know I've already told you that in the past: trying to not repeat what I've already done is a mandatory motivation for me :)

Have a great day!

Merci !

Workshop, book, interview on video work

Journal Entry: Fri Feb 18, 2011, 12:36 AM

Hello my friends,

What's up?

Photo workshop in Verona
I've been busy last weekend and gave a complete and detailed photography workshop in Verona, Italy thanks to MiMA association www.mima.cc It was a great experience for the participants and me!

Illustrations in a new book
Some of my illustrations are featured in Monsa Editions latest book www.monsa.com/en/art/european-…

You'll also have a chance to see before and after versions of some of my images here.  It's an interesting article if you'd like to learn a little bit more about how I tweak colors in my videos: www.redgiantsoftware.com/blog/…

New movies
Two new movies are on the way. One is roughly completed and will be published very soon. The other one is lacking soundtrack at the moment.

Busy days - No Advent Calendar - Thoughts

Journal Entry: Tue Dec 7, 2010, 1:09 AM

Hello my friends,

I hope you're all good. I'm currently working on several commercial projects, and most probably won't be able to publish anything personal until next year. Don't worry, I'm still full of ideas, I just need time :) And also need to take a break and some rest - that's what's great about the end of the year and its holidays ;)

If you're following my work or reading my journals for some time, you might have noticed that I haven't supervised the Advent Calendar project this year. I couldn't find time to do it and most of my artists/friends are busy as well, I knew it would be difficult to collaborate for them as well.

It has been a long time on DA, about 7 years, and I've always enjoyed being part of the community (and still continue to upload my work here). Many of my artists friends and I have started to make a living out of our art (or activities related to it, like my graphic design freelance job): it's an amazing luck, which also means that we're all more busy now. I see them more on Facebook than on DeviantArt nowadays.

For all these reasons, community projects like the Advent Calendar aren't much easy to do as they were.

Don't worry, I'll still be active on DA :) Your feedback are always valuable to me. My personal art will evolve, what's great now is that I'm not much concerned about popularity but try to improve on what's personally important to me - being it popular or not.

Cheers! :aww:

Daily Deviation for "embrio"

Journal Entry: Fri Nov 12, 2010, 1:49 AM

Hello!

I'm really happy that "embrio" has received this DD :) Thank you DA team for the Daily Deviation on this one! :aww:  It has been some time that I've started to create short movies and getting feedback on them is always quite appreciated.

I have neither uploaded nor shot much photos over the last months, but I'm just about to publish a new photo-story and I hope that you'll find it to be a refreshing change. More information very soon :)

In the meantime, here's a a selection of some recent short-movies:

e m b r i o - experimental short movie

Journal Entry: Sat Sep 25, 2010, 5:20 AM

[EDIT November 12. 2010]

Thank you DA team for the Daily Deviation on this one! :aww:

Dear friends,

I hope you are all great. I've finally uploaded "embrio" on DA.
The fourth chapter of a work on experimental short movies, "embrio" explores the inner impulses and obsessions of a young woman in a cold casual word.

While being sequential and apparently narrative, the movie actually focuses on sensations and feelings and is open to the viewer's interpretation. I hope that you will enjoy it.

Following the comments I've got, it's not about "getting" it: whenever I want to tell a regular story that is obvious, I'll ensure people get it right. So there's absolutely nothing wrong if you don't "get it". I like to occasionally leave the interpretation to the viewer without giving all the keys to the meaning(s) I have in mind. I find it great to think of my spectators as being active rather than passive.

Since the very beginning of my work, I've also experimented with different styles: something cheerful or personal like "Your Secret" or "Overglow", or more darker pieces like this series of experimental shorts. Following my work will hopefully give you diversity and surprise, rather than similar pieces.

Better-quality version available on Vimeo: vimeo.com/15272788
